The 25th of June it was Gaudi’s birthday. The Catalan genius was born in Reus, Tarragona, a village in south Catalonia. He came from a coppersmith family and the passion for this metal we see reflected in his later work on several buildings in Barcelona. He studied in the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura in Barcelona, and in the early years he stood out among the students as a very imaginative and innovative architect. That’s how Eusebi Güell, a wealthy Catalan bourgeois and an art lover, became his patron helping him to construct most of his buildings in the Catalan capital.
The Pedrera, Casa Batlló, Colònia and Parc Güell are the most representative examples of a wealthy era for the Catalan architecture. The collaboration between these two men at the end of the 19th century coincided with the splendorous times of Art Nouveau in Europe, but the movement was called Modernism in Catalonia thanks to Gaudí, who renewed the vanguard.
The history of Gaudi is vastly explained by the numerous people that have studied him and tried to understand the meaning of every detail of his life and work. There is no better way to be introduced to his history than to personally visit the buildings created by the hand of a specialist.
