The Department of Culture of the Catalan Autonomous Government and La Caixa Social Fund have recently signed a covenant to help restore and communicate the heritage of the Art Nouveau/Modernist cooperatives built by the architect, Cèsar Martinell. This covenant aims to invest 3.6 million euros in the Martinell Cooperatives. Martinell was a follower of Antoni Gaudí and his early buildings are also known nowadays as the “Cathedrals of Wine”.
Two of these “cathedrals” are to be found within the DO Montsant, and are the Cooperatives of Falset and Cornudella. The aim of this institutional agreement is to conserve and maintain the heritage of these buildings. The money will be spent on restoration work and also on communication.
